Uloop Morning Scoop: BYU gets Caffeinated, This Coffee Can Kill You and 4 places to Find a Winter Break Job

By Uloop Staff on September 22, 2017

Friday, where you have been all week? Glad you are here, though, like, you have no idea. Before you check out for the weekend, though, here’s what’s happening in the ‘real world’:

Trump’s new sanctions on North Korea leads to threats from Kim Jong Un

Trump announced new financial sanctions for North Korea on Thursday in an attempt to gain more international support against the rogue nation.

The Washington Post reports the new penalties, “…[force] nations, foreign companies and individuals to choose whether to do business with the United States or the comparatively tiny economy of North Korea.”

In response to the sanctions, Kim responded by calling Trump a “mentally deranged U.S. dotard,” he would “tame” Trump “with fire,” and he might test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific.

BYU is allowing caffeinated soda back on campus

BYU students annually celebrated Milkfest, but they can now drink something a little stronger (Image: BYU via BBC)

For this breaking college news, we’ll hand it right over to the BBC:

Brigham Young University, the largest Mormon college in the US, has decided to begin selling caffeinated sodas. The surprise announcement marks a major cultural shift for the church-owned university which has been designated “caffeine-free” since the 1950s.

Students had been advocating for the change since at least 2012 after the church revised its policy on the stimulant prized by college students. Mormons are still prohibited from consuming tea or coffee.”

Yeah, that 7-Eleven across from campus is not feeling good this morning.

In other caffeine news (and no, we’re not making this up), a company that makes a drink called Death Wish Coffee has recalled its product because of it could potentially cause… death.

Gothamist reports, “ Death Wish Nitro, which is now being voluntarily recalled for being possibly tainted with botulism, the bacteria that can weaken the muscles of the respiratory system…which can lead to death.”

At least they won’t have to worry about that at BYU.

TWEET OF THE DAY

It may not feel like it everywhere (it’s supposed to 90 here today), but yep:

Uber loses its license to operate in London

Could be big trouble for Uber in London (Image:YouTube screenshot/Uber)

If you’re in London anytime soon, better plan on taking the Tube. London’s transport authority announced today it will not renew Uber’s license to operate in the city, saying it is not “fit and proper.”

CNN’s Alana Petroff writes that, “Transport for London cited the company’s approach to reporting serious criminal offenses, and its use of software that prevents regulators and law enforcement from monitoring the app.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said he ‘fully supports’  the decision to not renew the license when it expires September 30.”

Expect Uber to appeal that decision vigorously. The ride-sharing company can continue to operate while the decision is under appeal.

And finally on this Friday morning, it’s time to look for a winter break job!
